A instituição, que é a segunda universidade mais antiga entre as que usam a língua inglesa, é considerada uma das mais importantes do planeta, muito por conta de sua histórica contribuição para diversas áreas de conhecimento.

Qual é a história da Universidade Cambridge?

No final do século XII, as instituições de ensino superior ainda não eram reconhecidas como essenciais para o desenvolvimento do país. Na Europa, os estudos eram, basicamente, comandados por monges enviados pela igreja para lecionar em diferentes áreas. Uma delas era Cambridge.

A tradição de ensino que já existia na região foi um dos fatores que atraíram acadêmicos saídos da Universidade de Oxford, que passava por problemas legais. Em 1209, pegando emprestado o nome da cidade, eles formaram a Universidade Cambridge. Contudo, apenas 22 anos depois o rei da Inglaterra concedeu à instituição o monopólio do ensino na região.

O que começou com um pequeno grupo de educadores buscando um lugar para conduzir seus estudos e pesquisas se desenvolveu em uma das universidades mais importantes da história. Mais de 810 anos depois de sua fundação, a Universidade Cambridge conta com 18.000 estudantes e é um nome certo no topo dos principais rankings que avaliam organizações de ensino.

Quais são os principais cursos oferecidos pela universidade?

A Universidade Cambridge é dividida em 31 colégios independentes, que são supervisionados pela administração central. Entre eles, são oferecidos 30 cursos de graduação com mais de 60 opções diferentes de especialização. Entre os seus departamentos mais prestigiados, está o de anatomia, considerado o mais qualificado do mundo pelo QS World Rankings.

No mesmo ranking, Cambridge aparece entre as 10 melhores universidades em nada menos que 39 cursos. Áreas como linguagens, ciências naturais, engenharia e matemática atraem estudantes do mundo todo: o corpo estudantil conta com integrantes originários de mais de 50 países.

Quem são os ex-alunos mais notáveis da Universidade Cambridge?

Isaac Newton

Filósofo, físico, matemático e teólogo, Sir Isaac Newton conduziu grande parte de seus experimentos no solo da Universidade de Cambridge. Lá, ele foi aluno, professor e até membro do Parlamento inglês, representando os interesses da universidade.

Newton é um dos nomes mais importantes da história da ciência, sendo o responsável por desenvolver a lei da gravidade e as três leis de movimento, que ficaram conhecidas como Leis de Newton.

Charles Darwin

Frustrado com a relutância de Charles Darwin em concluir a faculdade de medicina, seu pai o enviou para Cambridge com o objetivo de torná-lo um homem do clero. Não foi o que aconteceu. Lá, Darwin descobriu a paixão pelo estudo da natureza, o que o levou a estruturar a teoria da evolução.

Ian McKellen

Não apenas cientistas se formaram em Cambridge. A universidade lançou ao mundo talentos nas áreas mais diversas, incluindo arte. Um dos exemplos bem-sucedidos é Ian McKellen, famoso por personagens como o Magneto, de “X-Men”, e Gandalf, de “Senhor dos Anéis”.

Alan Turing

Você já assistiu a “O Jogo da Imitação”? O filme conta a história de Alan Turing, um matemático formado na Universidade Cambridge que teve contribuição decisiva na Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Seu trabalho era tão à frente de seu tempo que, até hoje, os conhecimentos de Turing são utilizados na ciência da computação, especialmente no que diz respeito à inteligência artificial.

Quais são os passos para se candidatar ao ingresso na universidade?

Como você deve imaginar, ingressar na Universidade Cambridge é uma missão que inclui vasta concorrência. Porém, trata-se de algo completamente possível, especialmente se você se preparar bem. O mais importante é checar a data-limite para início da aplicação, que costuma variar de ano para ano.

No website da universidade, você pode preencher a aplicação e responder a alguns questionários extras. Com isso feito, é preciso enviar alguns documentos específicos, como o histórico escolar do ensino médio, o diploma e o certificado de conclusão. O processo seletivo também exige uma redação, cujo tema varia de acordo com o curso.

Em seguida, você poderá ser convidado para agendar uma entrevista, que nem sempre é solicitada. Entre todos os aplicantes, cerca de 75% chegam a essa etapa. Com todos os passos realizados, é só esperar uma decisão oficial da instituição, o que acontece antes do fim de janeiro.

Como é a vida no campus da Universidade Cambridge?

A vida do estudante na Universidade Cambridge é uma das experiências mais ricas que se pode ter. O campus é formado por edifícios com séculos de história — entre eles, mais de 100 bibliotecas, sendo que a principal delas conta com mais de 8 milhões de volumes disponíveis para a população universitária.

Além disso, o espaço abriga museus, galerias de arte e até um jardim botânico. Os dormitórios são bem próximos ao Centro da cidade, o que facilita a locomoção dos alunos, que, aliás, representam 20% dos habitantes de Cambridge.
